Red and Blue

On the June 28 mock naval battle between “red” and “blue” fleets to mark the bicentenary year of the 1805 Battle of Trafalgar:

A spokeswoman for the Royal Navy said

“Nelson is featured, but we are not billing it as Britain versus France… This will not be a French-bashing opportunity.”

Of course not.

  1. The British Navy was divided into Red, White, and Blue fleets. If I recall my Robert Southey correctly, Nelson was Admiral of the White, so his division is not even represented.

  2. I was referring to the red of the ship-symbols, not the ensigns. For an instructive animation, also with red ship-symbols, see the National Maritime Museum’s Battle of Trafalgar.
